Autocomplete

Autocomplete

Algolia provides a great autocomplete library called autocomplete.js (opens in a new tab) which can be used with Searchkit. This guide will show you how to use it.

A working example can be found here.

Hits Autocomplete Example

This example shows how to use autocomplete.js with Searchkit. It uses the getAlgoliaResults function from the autocomplete.js library.

import client from "@searchkit/instantsearch-client";
import {
  getAlgoliaResults
} from "@algolia/autocomplete-js";

const searchClient = client({
  url: "https://ises-cfw.searchkit.workers.dev"
});

getSources={({ query, state }) => {
    if (!query) {
      return [];
    }

    return [
      {
        sourceId: "movies",
        getItems() {
          // using searchkit to get results for the query
          return getAlgoliaResults({
            searchClient,
            queries: [
              {
                indexName: "imdb_movies",
                query,
                params: {
                  query
                }
              }
            ],
            transformResponse({ hits }) {
              const [imdbMoviesHits] = hits;
              return imdbMoviesHits;
            }
          });
        },
        templates: {
          header() {
            return (
              <Fragment>
                <span className="aa-SourceHeaderTitle">Movies</span>
                <div className="aa-SourceHeaderLine" />
              </Fragment>
            );
          },
          item({ item, components }) {
            return <div>{item.title}</div>;
          },
          noResults() {
            return "No movies for this query.";
          }
        }
      }
    ];
  }}

Facets Autocomplete Example

This example shows how to use autocomplete.js with facets. It uses the getAlgoliaFacets function from the autocomplete.js library.

It queries the actors facet and returns the top 5 results. If the user types a query, it will return the top 3 results.

import client from "@searchkit/instantsearch-client";
import {
  getAlgoliaFacets
} from "@algolia/autocomplete-js";

const searchClient = client({
  url: "https://ises-cfw.searchkit.workers.dev"
});

function createCategoriesPlugin({
  searchClient
}) {
  return {
    getSources({ query }) {
      return [
        {
          sourceId: "actorsPlugin",
          getItems() {
            return getAlgoliaFacets({
              searchClient,
              queries: [
                {
                  indexName: "imdb_movies",
                  facet: "actors",
                  params: {
                    facetName: "actors",
                    facetQuery: query,
                    maxFacetHits: query ? 3 : 5
                  }
                }
              ]
            });
          },
          templates: {
            header() {
              return (
                <Fragment>
                  <span className="aa-SourceHeaderTitle">Actors</span>
                  <div className="aa-SourceHeaderLine" />
                </Fragment>
              );
            },
            item({ item, components }) {
              return (
                <div className="aa-ItemWrapper">
                  <div className="aa-ItemContent">
                    <div className="aa-ItemContentBody">
                      <div className="aa-ItemContentTitle">{item.label}</div>
                    </div>
                  </div>
                </div>
              );
            }
          }
        }
      ];
    }
  };
}
